THE STUDIO IMAGE PROJECT
About: Friend of the Artist is pleased to present The Studio Image Project. This project was born out of a desire to understand the work of artists we love and support. An artist's studio can be a sacred space that inspires creativity and, for those of us fortunate enough to be granted entrance, it brings the artist’s work to life in a context distinctly removed from that of bustling galleries and museums.
The Studio Image Project aims to uncover some of the hidden stories behind these studio spaces and their role in their inhabitants’ artistic practices. As we received more and more images for the project, questions began to form: How did the artist come about this studio? What role does the studio play in relation to the work created within it? Are there elements or objects in the studio with special significance to the artist? In putting these questions to the artists, an overarching theme emerged: artists see their studios as a sanctuary.
Throughout the following pages, we have included quotes and interviews with artists, shedding further light on the seminal role this time-honored space plays in bringing new works of art to life. From the challenges of finding a space, to considerations of size and scale, music and light, we hope you enjoy the artists' anecdotes and the glimpses provided into their unique worlds.
